Dental inlays and onlays are used to protect and strengthen teeth that have weakened due to damage or decay.

They are used towards the back of the mouth and are used when a tooth shows damage yet does not need a filling or a crown. An added benefit of these restorations is that little preparation is required to the natural tooth – meaning more of the enamel is preserved than with some other treatments.

Inlays are fixed to the centre of a tooth, within the four cusps. An onlay is fixed to overlap the four corners and provides slightly more coverage.

While inlays and onlays can be made from metal such as gold, the most popular choice for most Royal Wharf Dental patients is porcelain as these are colour-matched to the natural tooth and blend into the rest of the mouth.

Inlays and onlays have also been used to replace traditional silver amalgam fillings.
